Positive airway pressure (PAP) is the established gold standard in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and respiratory insufficiency. A distinction is made between different forms of ventilation. In CPAP therapy (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure), patients are supplied with continuously increased pressure via a medical mask, usually a nasal mask, which prevents the airways from collapsing and thus enables natural breathing during sleep. In BPAP therapy (Biphasic Positive Airway Pressure), breathing is supported by high pressure during the inspiration phase and a reduction in pressure during the expiration phase. The pressures, pressure ranges and other treatment parameters are set by the medical staff.
